Cathy calls it a Day

After 46 years in education and 12 years at the helm of Townsville Catholic Education, Dr Cathy Day retires today.

As Executive Director, Cathy has also been a member of the Queensland Catholic Education Commission and was officially farewelled at the March Commission meeting in Brisbane.

Cathy says the highlights of her time as Executive Director of the Townsville Catholic Education Office have included the opening of St Benedict’s Catholic School in 2018 and the establishment of Mulkadee as one of the most recognised school arts festivals.

She was instrumental in establishing the festival during her first year as Executive Director.

“I was so intent on creating something amazing that would uplift the arts within our Diocese,” she said.

“We had such fantastic arts teachers, and that was something I thought we should build on.”

Cathy says she hopes to continue participating in the festival as an audience member once she retires and that’s not all she hopes to do in her life after Catholic education.

“People keep asking me what I am going to do once I retire.

“I’m going to step back and just be open to new opportunities,” she said.

Cathy will also remain the Chair of the board of the Tropical Brain and Mind Research Foundation.

“We are just about to launch a significant project on mental health in Townsville, something we are very much in need of,” she said.

Cathy will be succeeded as Executive Director by Townsville Catholic Education’s current Director of Organisational Services and Capability Jacqui Francis.
