As Queensland Catholic Education Week (CEW 2020) draws to a close, we reflect on the wonderful celebrations had by Catholic schools across Queensland this week.
When Queensland’s first Catholic school opened in Brisbane in 1845 with two teachers and 56 students, neither staff nor students and their families could have realised that they were laying the foundations of a strong and vibrant education sector.
There are now 307 Catholic schools spread right across the state from the Torres Strait to the Gold Coast and west to Mt Isa and Quilpie with more than 154,000 students with schools ranging from tiny country schools to city schools with almost 2,000 students, and including 16 boarding schools.
This year, many schools took the time to celebrate these milestones by paying tribute to 175 years of Catholic education in Queensland as part of their CEW 2020 celebrations.
